A Great Smile for Christmas

January 12, 2015

You dread being in front of the camera, and at no point during the year is this more obvious than at Christmas. The family gathers around for a group photo and your niece gets ready to take the shot. Just as you are expecting the flash to go off, she lowers the camera and says, “Would it kill you to smile?”. You blush a little and try to look happier for the photo, but you don’t smile wide and bright the way that the rest of the family does.

Many people are embarrassed of their teeth and photos can be particularly worrisome for them. Whether they are concerned about the whiteness of their teeth, crooked teeth, or a host of other dental issues, people who don’t like their smile often have a difficult time with having their portrait taken. Luckily for them (or you), modern dentistry can rectify any dental issues that you may have, and often with little to no pain.

Medical technology has advanced so quickly in the last couple of decades that your experiences with the dentist 20 or 30 years ago is vastly different than the experience that you will have today. These days, dental hygienists and dentists have a much wider array of tools and technologies at their disposal, as well as a better understanding of human pain and odontophobia (or fear of the dentist).

For example, Dr. Mark Honce was one of the first dentists in Canada to bring GENTLE Gum Grafting to BC. This specialized form of tissue grafting uses Alloderm tissues to help repair receding gum lines. Prior to this innovation, tissues would need to be harvested from the roof of your mouth, so you can imagine how welcome the new allograft techniques are for both the patient and the dentist!

Dental implants are another dental innovation that has come a long way. Again, Dr. Mark trained in the procedures for dental implant surgery in 2005 and was an early advocate of this therapy in Kelowna. Dental implant therapy allows patients to replace missing teeth and get a complete, confident smile, as well as the increased quality of life that comes with being able to enjoy a delicious holiday meal without pain or concern.

With so many incredible innovations available to dental patients, now is the time to get the smile that you deserve. Stop shying away from the camera and be ready for the family portrait this holiday season. After all, what could be a better Christmas gift for yourself or a loved one?
