Receding gums, or gingival recession, is what happens when gum tissue starts to erode or withdraw. This is typically one of the major initial signs of gum disease and receding gums are quite common. However, unless the case is very severe, many sufferers do not realize they are experiencing gum recession as the process happens very gradually, which is just another reason why it is so important to come in for regular check-ups!
As with many medical or dental issues, the key is catching it early on. Leaving receding gums untreated can lead to bone and tooth loss. So what can be done about receding gums?
As Kelowna dental specialists, our first thought when it comes to dental health issues, including receding gums, is how do we address the cause? Handling the symptom is all well and good, but proper dental care will address the cause as well, meaning that the symptom is unlikely to return. From brushing too hard to a misaligned bite to extreme tartar buildup, there are a number of issues that may be causing your gums to recede. Our first step is determining which of these issues is at play in your situation. From there, we can tailor a dental remedy based on your specific needs.
Depending on the severity of your gum recession, we can also offer a revolutionary grafting treatment to help rebuild your gums. Thankfully, our GENTLE gum grafting technique does not require the removal of sensitive tissue from the roof of your mouth! As a result, our process is less painful than traditional techniques. IOur very own Dr. Mark Honce was one of the first dentists to bring this treatment to British Columbia.
If you think you may be suffering from receding gums, don’t be embarrassed and delay coming in, we really do see this issue on a regular basis and it is nothing to be embarrassed about! The sooner we can treat your specific needs, the sooner we can arrest the recession.
