What is a Dental Crown?

At Honce Dental Centre, one of the many things that we pride ourselves on is communication. We like to take the time to answer patient questions, communicate with them on their oral health and, if necessary, educate patients on the treatments available for their specific condition at our Kelowna dental clinic.

One question that consistently comes up in discussion is “What is a dental crown?”

In short, a dental crown is essentially a cap that is set either permanently or temporarily on a tooth. A crown covers the whole of the visible part of the tooth (up to the gum line), and can be made from a number of different materials, including metals and resin.

There are many reasons that we might recommend a dental crown. Crowns are particularly effective for protecting a weak or damaged tooth and they are also highly useful for restoring function to a worn down or severely damaged tooth. Dental crowns can also be used to conceal discoloured or misshapen teeth, for those who are concerned about the cosmetics of their dental work. In other words, dental crowns can be a good solution for those who are looking for cosmetic dental work.
