Celebrate Shark Week with Cool Facts about Shark Teeth!

August 12, 2014

Shark Week 2014 kicked off on Sunday, August 10th, and to celebrate we thought we’d share some cool facts about shark teeth!

Here are 5 facts for you to sink your teeth into...

  • Sharks can regrow their teeth, and the ability to do so is vital to their survival. During an average shark lifetime, a single shark may lose 1000s of teeth on prey or because of damage. However, replacements come through quickly...
  • Generally speaking, a shark can replace a lost tooth in about a day.
  • On average, a shark tends to lose a tooth per week.
  • Sharks have multiple rows of teeth. In other words, they have replacement teeth sitting in their jaw beneath their current set of teeth.
  • Shark teeth are made from the same materials as human teeth. However, thanks to evolution, sharks are able to grow multiple sets of teeth, while we are genetically equipped to grow only two sets (deciduous and permanent teeth).

What is Shark Week?

Now firmly rooted in pop culture, Shark Week is an annual weeklong Discovery Channel television event. Each year the Discovery Channel delivers a week of shark related feature programming. The event was created to help increase awareness of sharks, as well as raise understanding and respect for the creatures. It has been running since 1988 - making Shark Week the longest-running television event of all-time.
