Why is my Jaw Clicking?

October 8, 2014

If your jaw is clicking or popping, it is possible that there is an issue with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), or the muscles that interact with the joint. A dysfunction with or affecting your TMJ is known as a TMD - these are terms you will find floating around online or in dental offices.  Jaw clicking is one of the most common symptoms of TMD and a problem that is faced by many.

The temporomandibular joint serves an essential function as it is what attaches your skull to your mandible (jawbone/lower jaw). Essentially, the TMJ is your jaw’s hinge. The joint can suffer from arthritis, while things like traumas (whiplash, blows to the jaw) can cause dislocation and other damage. Even grinding or excessive chewing or jaw stretching can cause problems with your TMJ. In addition, it seems that issues with the muscles and intricate parts that interact with your TMJ can also have an impact and contribute to symptoms such as jaw clicking.

A problem with your temporomandibular joint can also manifest itself in a number of other symptoms. These include headaches, difficulty opening your mouth very far, facial swelling, pain in the face etc.

The good news is that TMD can be treated, and the specific treatment available to you is dependent on your individual situation. Dr. Mark Honce and Dr. Myles Honce have many years experience diagnosing TMD and providing TMJ therapy via our Kelowna dentistry clinic, and Mark has trained under one of the most prominent practitioners in the field, Dr. Clayton Chan.
